Here is some expert
advice!
Anna from
Manorville asks...
My 10 year old
Labrador Retriever
often has foul
smelling gas in the
evening, I only feed
her low fat dog
food. What
could be the
problem?
Your dog’s gas
is, unfortunately, a
product of her
digestion. Excess
gas may be an
indication her food
does not completely
agree with her. Many
low fat diets are
full of high levels
of fiber. The body
can produce gas when
digesting this
fiber. You may want
to try alternative
low fat foods, but
remember to change
foods slowly. If you
make fast changes,
it can upset a pet's
GI tract and cause
diarrhea.
Bobbi from
Holbrook asks.. I
have a Maine Coon
long-haired cat and
she often gets feces
caught in her rear
hair. What can I do
to prevent this from
happening?
Long hair cats
need to be groomed.
If the cat's hair is
too long in the back
it can lead to stool
sticking and be a
source of urinary
infections. If the
cat is well groomed
than the stool may
be slightly wet.
This can be caused
by food
sensitivities or
mild inflammatory
bowel disease. If
the area is well
groomed, I would
suggest discussing
this problem with
your cat's
Veterinarian. Bring
in a sample at the
visit so he/she can
see the stool and
send it to the lab.
Why aren’t the birds
flying?
All of our birds
wings are trimmed.
Birds feathers grow
constantly. It is as
painless to trim
their flight
feathers as it is
for us to trim our
fingernails. Like
fingernails, flight
feathers must be
trimmed regularly if
you don’t want your
birds to fly.
What is the
lifespan of the
small mammals?
Hamsters: 2-3
years
Rabbits: 6-8 years
Gerbils: 2-4 years
Guinea Pigs: 5-7
years
Ferrets: 6-8 years
Cats: 13-17 years
What do the reptiles
eat?
Some reptiles
are vegetarian.
Others eat store
bought pellet food
as well as bugs,
like circkets.
Larger snakes eat
mice and rats
depending on their
size.
Can fish live in
small glass bowls?
With the
exception of Betta
fish, all fish need
a tank with a
filter. The filter
cleans the uneaten
food and waste out
of the water.
How can I housebreak
my puppy?
We recommend
kennel training.
Dogs, by nature, are
denning animals.
They like to live in
small enclosed
spaces and will
always choose not to
urinate or deficate
where they sleep.
Kennels replicate
dens and puppies
will learn quickly
not to mess in their
kennels.
